UDIA Submission – Kickstart Productivity

25 July 2025

Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) took part in an Economic Reform Roundtable regarding Kickstarting Growth, and have provided recommendations that will kickstart growth and productivity.

Australia is continuing to struggle to deliver against the National Housing Accord (Accord) target of 1.2 million new homes over 5 years. This is due to high construction costs, skilled labour shortages, scarce development ready land, choked infrastructure delivery, high tax burdens and inefficient planning & environmental approvals. UDIA champions an ongoing, “stretch” Accord target, to ensure we have direction and a clear view on progress. This must be supported by accurate nationwide forecasting to assess housing barriers.
